![]() The Society of Saint Pius X has been the subject of much controversy since 1988, when Bernard Fellay, Bernard Tissier de Mallerais, Richard Williamson and Alfonso de Galarreta were illicitly consecrated at Ecône, at the International Seminary of Saint Pius X as bishops in violation of canon law. Have a news tip? Submit news to our tip line. The canonical situation of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), a group founded in 1970 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, is unresolved. The Jubilee Year of Mercy ended on Sunday, November 20. In Sunday's Apostolic Letter, the Pope said,įor the pastoral benefit of these faithful, and trusting in the good will of their priests to strive with God's help for the recovery of full communion in the Catholic Church, I have personally decided to extend this faculty beyond the Jubilee Year, until further provisions are made, lest anyone ever be deprived of the sacramental sign of reconciliation through the Church's pardon. In his 2015 letter, Pope Francis declared, "I establish that those who during the Holy Year of Mercy approach these priests of the Fraternity of St Pius X to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation shall validly and licitly receive the absolution of their sins." Although Pope Francis has extended faculties to absolve sins, he has not granted similar faculties for SSPX clergy to validly witness marriages. In order for a priest to validly witness marriages and grant absolution in confession, a priest requires not only the sacrament of Holy Orders but also the faculties - or permission - of a bishop in union with the Pope. The group was separated from the Catholic Church in 1988 when its founder consecrated bishops against the Pope's express prohibition.īoth Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis have noted that the SSPX is not in "full communion" with the Catholic Church. Pope Francis is also allowing the laity to validly receive absolution from priests in the SSPX, a traditionalist group that disregards the Second Vatican Council and the New Mass. Tobin of Providence, Rhode Island commented that, "while it's a wonderful gesture on behalf of the Holy Father, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference here in Rhode Island." When Pope Francis granted his dispensation last year, some bishops noted it doesn't affect much in the United States. He may, however, on certain conditions and occasions grant that power to priests subject to him.įor nearly 30 years, bishops in the United States have been allowing priests to forgive the sin of abortion in confession. Only the bishop of a diocese has the ability to extend the Church's forgiveness to a person who incurs an excommunication. ![]() The sin of abortion carries with it a "latae sententiae," or automatic, excommunication, meaning it is so grave a sin it separates a person from the Catholic Church and forbids participation in the sacraments. In many places in the world absolution for the sin of abortion had been reserved only for the bishop of the diocese. ![]() He admonished the faithful "that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life," and added, "there is no sin that God's mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father." In the Holy Father's newest letter released Sunday, he declared, "The provision I had made in this regard, limited to the duration of the Extraordinary Holy Year, is hereby extended." ![]() ![]() The basses pick it up at “Gaude Virgo gloriosa.” From there, it appears briefly in other voices, surrounded by embellishments. It begins in the tenor incipit and then passes to soprano. He keeps the traditional chant melody present through most of the piece. This may be the first time anything good has ever come from reading YouTube comments. By the time I got up the next morning, he had already sent me a PDF with his gracious best wishes. Talley was willing to send the score to anyone who emailed him. Texture in music is how the melodic and harmonic layers combine when you hear them in a piece of music. I scrolled through the comments under the video and saw that Mr. Polyphonic texture in music occurs when there are two or more independent melodic lines. But after listening to his delightful Ave Regina Caelorum on YouTube, I immediately wanted a copy. Talley other than the fact that he is a living composer who maintains a YouTube channel. It was there that I happened across another option: a setting by Steven Talley. CPDL seldom disappoints, and I soon headed to YouTube to listen to a couple of possibilities. So after rehearsal, I did what many of you have probably done countless times: I went home and looked for a good setting on Choral Public Domain Library. I suddenly realized that in my repertoire selection, I had neglected the fourth one. We’ve sung the Aichinger setting of Regina Caeli for years, and we sang deCristo’s setting one Easter.īut that’s only three of the four traditional Marian antiphons. We sing settings of Alma Redemptoris Mater by Palestrina and Salazar ( I’ve written about the latter). We have a couple of polyphonic Salve Reginas (I’ve written here before about the lovely setting by Alvez Barkoskie IV). Credo (Missa Carminum) has a four-part polyphonic texture with individual melody lines in each of the parts. These terms are by no means mutually exclusive, and composers from the 16th through the 21st century have commonly varied textures from complex polyphony to rhythmically uniform homophony, even within the same piece.OME WEEKS AGO, A MEMBER OF MY CHOIR asked, “Do we have a polyphonic setting of Ave Regina Caelorum?” I racked my brain. Polyphonic texture is a type of musical texture that features two or more independent melodic voices, as opposed to a monophonic texture which only features one melodic line. A subcategory of polyphony, called homophony, exists in its purest form when all the voices or parts move together in the same rhythm, as in a texture of block chords. A texture is more purely polyphonic, and thus more contrapuntal, when the musical lines are rhythmically differentiated. In Western music, polyphony typically includes a contrapuntal separation of melody and bass. In polyphonic music, two or more simultaneous melodic lines are perceived as independent even though they are related. Homophony is the texture we hear most in pop music on the radio, film music, jazz, rock, and most classical music of the last century. The other two main types of texture are monophonic and polyphonic. Usually, however, polyphony is associated with counterpoint, the combination of distinct melodic lines. Homophonic texture, also called homophony, is by far the most common type of texture found in music today. Thus, even a single interval made up of two simultaneous tones or a chord of three simultaneous tones is rudimentarily polyphonic. Polyphony, in music, the simultaneous combination of two or more tones or melodic lines (the term derives from the Greek word for “many sounds”). ![]() ![]() Skeptics contend that these sightings were simply misidentified animals whose appearances were distorted by “contaminated memory.”īut researchers also deem it presumptuous to draw definitive conclusions when most of our planet has not been studied. So it’s difficult to say whether the thylacine is extinct or still alive. However, like most accounts, the thylacine sightings in this report lacked hard evidence to corroborate their claims. National Archives of Australia The complete skeleton of a Tasmanian tiger. “I am accustomed to coming across most animals working on rural farms… and I have never come across an animal anything close to what I saw in Tasmania that day,” said one eyewitness in a 2019 report released by Tasmania’s Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment. Still, more witness accounts emerged thereafter. ![]() But researcher Nick Mooney, the foremost authority on thylacine sightings, believed that the grainy video likely showed a large quoll. ![]() In 2017, a group called the Booth Richardson Tiger Team (BRTT) held a press conference to release video footage of what they believed was a Tasmanian tiger caught on camera. Locals slowly began to report hundreds of thylacine sightings, both in Tasmania and mainland Australia.Īnd in the 21st century, the number of alleged thylacine sightings has only risen. National Archives of Australia Scientists began searching for more thylacines in the late 1930s.Īlthough the thylacine was believed to be extinct after 1936, a strange phenomenon emerged after the animal’s supposed eradication. This was only two months after the species was offered government protection.īut nearly a century later, the extinction of the thylacine is still questioned. The last living thylacine on record was a captive male named Benjamin that died of exposure at a zoo in Hobart, Tasmania in 1936 - after being locked out of its shelter on a cold night. On top of the bounties, thylacines also faced competition with dogs, habitat loss, and even an epidemic disease that caused their population to shrink even more over the next few decades. So unsurprisingly, a decline in the population was reported in the early 1900s. But after European settlers arrived, thylacines reportedly preyed on farmers’ livestock, which led to multiple bounties paid by the government to eradicate the species.īetween 1888 to 1909, more than 2,000 such bounties were paid. They preyed upon birds, small rodents, and even other marsupials like kangaroos. Thylacines mainly hunted at night, either solo or in pairs. Both male and female thylacines had back-opening pouches, but the ones on the males were only partially open.įemale thylacines gave birth to a litter of up to four joeys at a time and reared their young until they were at least half-grown. Since Tasmanian tigers were marsupials, they reared their young inside natural pouches like koalas or kangaroos. Each thylacine was sandy yellowish-brown to gray in color and had about 15 to 20 dark stripes on its back.ĭigitized rare footage from 1935 of a thylacine held in captivity. Thylacines, also called Tasmanian tigers, were distinguishable by their wolf-like appearance - though they were more closely related to the Tasmanian devil than wolves or tigers. This included the tail, which was stiff and thick at the base. We discovered that these striking predators - with large jaws filled with 46 powerful teeth - grew as long as six feet. Scientists learned little about thylacines before they went extinct, but there are a few things we do know. “A lost object of awe, one more symbol of our feckless ignorance and stupidity.” Novelist Richard Flanagan on the Tasmanian tiger But it was also a source of constant irritation to the European settlers who arrived on the continent in the 18th century. However, it persisted in Tasmania, making it synonymous with the small island south of the country’s mainland. But for reasons unknown, it went extinct on Australia’s mainland about 2,000 years ago. At one point, it was found all over continental Australia, extending north to New Guinea and south to Tasmania. The thylacine, known by its full scientific name Thylacinus cynocephalus, was a carnivorous marsupial that made its first appearance 4 million years ago. Records also are “meant” to be played at specific speeds: 33, 45 or 78 revolutions per minute. Records themselves come in a few sizes: 7-, 10- and 12-inch formats. The shorter the record’s runtime, the smaller the diameter of the record, and the more revolutions per minute the record should be played at.
